하와이 글로벌 감리교회들, ‘일곱 가지 말씀과 찬송의 축제’로 성탄절 예배 드려
12월 25일 성탄절, 하와이에 속한 글로벌 감리교회(GMC) 성도들이 예수 그리스도의 탄생을 기념하며, 구원의 소망과 새 생명의 약속을 선포하는 경건하고 다문화적인 일곱 가지 말씀과 찬송의 축제 예배로 함께 모였다. 로뎀교회(담임: 이성현 목사)와 에바비치 제일 통간 글로벌감리교회(담임: 알라니 투이투포우 목사)는 연합 성탄 예배를 드렸으며, 약 300명의 성도들이 함께 예배에 참여하였다. 이번 예배는 기독교의 역사적 전통을 따르면서도 하와이 지역 교회의 다문화적 정체성을 잘 드러내는 자리였다. 일곱 가지 말씀과 찬송의 축제는 성탄절에 전통적으로 드려지는 예배 형식으로, 일곱 개의 성경 본문을 통해 구속사의 흐름을 따라간다. 창세기, 예언서, 복음서에서 발췌된 말씀들은 인류의 타락, 메시아에 대한 하나님의 약속, 그리고 예수 그리스도의 탄생을 선포한다. 각 말씀 사이에는 성탄 찬송, 성가, 찬양이 이어지며, 말씀과 음악이 함께 복음을 증언한다. 성경 봉독은 영어, 한국어, 통간어, 스페니쉬어로 이루어져, 그리스도의 몸 된 교회의 글로벌하고 다문화적인 본질을 드러냈다. 회중 찬송과 더불어 아동부, 중·고등부, 우클렐레 팀, 로뎀교회 성가대, 그리고 통간 교회 성가대가 함께 찬양하며 예수님의 탄생을 기뻐하였다. 말씀은 통간 교회의 평신도 지도자이며, 글로벌 감리교회 서부지역 연회 기도 사역 위원장인 코아네티 라우아키 씨가 “성탄을 위한 하나님의 영적 선물(The Divine Gifts for Christmas)”이라는 제목으로 전했다. 그는 성육신을 통해 주어지는 하나님의 은혜와 소망, 그리고 영적 선물에 대해 성도들이 깊이 묵상하도록 초청하였다. 예배는 두 교회의 담임목사인 알라니 투이투포우 목사와 이성현 목사의 공동 축도로 마무리되었으며, 글로벌 감리교회 안에서의 연합과 공동 사명을 다시 한번 확인하는 시간이 되었다. 그러므로 이번 성탄 예배는 말씀과 찬양을 통해 복음의 진리를 증언하며, 문화와 언어의 경계를 넘어 사랑 안에서 하나 된 신앙 공동체로 살아가도록 부르시는 하나님의 초청을 분명히 드러냈다. 또한 이 연합의 은혜는 성탄 예배로만 끝나지 않았다. 다음 날인 12월 26일부터 28일까지, 로뎀교회와 에바비치 제일 통간 글로벌감리교회, 그리고 LA 베이직 교회의 유스들이 함께 연합하여, 총 25명의 유스 학생들과 여러 리더들이 하와이 호미라니 수양관에서 연합 수련회를 진행하였다. 이번 수련회는 말씀과 기도, 공동체 훈련을 중심으로 진행되었으며, 복음을 지키고 전하는 사명이 다음 세대로 반드시 이어져야 함을 다시 한번 확인하는 귀한 시간이 되었다. 세대를 넘어 이어지는 신앙 전수와 글로벌 감리교회의 미래를 향한 소망이 이 수련회를 통해 분명히 선포되었다. 글 | 이성현 목사

Global Methodist Churches in Hawaii Celebrate Christmas with a Festival of the Seven Lessons and Carols On December 25, Global Methodist congregations across Hawaii gathered to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ through a reverent and multicultural Festival of the Seven Lessons and Carols, proclaiming the hope of salvation and the promise of new life in Christ. The Rodem Church (Rev. Jonathan Lee) and The Ewa Beach First Tongan Global Methodist Church (Rev. Alani Tuitupou) came together in a joint Christmas worship service, drawing a total of approximately 300 worshipers. The service reflected both the historic Christian tradition and the diverse cultural context of the church in Hawaii. The Festival of the Seven Lessons and Carols is a traditional Christmas liturgy that traces the redemptive narrative of Scripture through seven selected biblical readings. Passages from Genesis, the Prophets, and the Gospels recount humanity’s fall, God’s promise of a Messiah, and the birth of Jesus Christ. These readings are interwoven with Christmas hymns, choral anthems, and songs of praise, allowing Scripture and music together to proclaim the gospel. Scripture was read in English, Korean, Tongan, and Spanish, expressing the global and multicultural nature of the body of Christ. Worship was enriched through congregational singing as well as musical offerings from the children’s ministry, middle- and high- school youth, a ukulele team, the Rodem Church Choir, and the choir of the Tongan congregation. The message was delivered by Mr. Koaneti Lauaki, a lay leader of the Tongan church and the Prayer Ministry Chair for the Global Methodist Church Western Annual Conference. His sermon, titled “The Divine Gifts for Christmas,” invited the congregation to reflect on the grace, hope, and spiritual gifts given through the incarnation of Christ. The service concluded with a joint benediction offered by the senior pastors of both congregations, Rev. Alani Tuitupou and Rev. Jonathan Lee, affirming unity in Christ and shared mission within the Global Methodist Church. Through the Word and song, this Christmas celebration bore witness to the truth of the gospel and the call to become a faith community united in love, reaching beyond cultural and linguistic boundaries to participate in God’s redemptive work for all humanity. The Christmas celebration did not conclude with the worship service. From December 26 to 28, Rodem Church, Ewa Beach First Tongan Global Methodist Church, and LA Basic Church continued their shared ministry through a joint youth retreat held at the Homelani Retreat Center in Hawaii. A total of 25 youth and many leaders participated in the retreat. Centered on the Word, prayer, and Christian fellowship, the retreat provided an opportunity to reaffirm that the mission of guarding and proclaiming the gospel must be faithfully passed on to the next generation.
