글로벌 감리교회(GMC) 한미연회 장로 목사회가 지난 2월 9일(월)부터 11일(수)까지 네바다주 라스베가스 글로벌감리교회에서 정기 모임을 갖고 교단의 정체성을 재확인하며 사명을 다짐하는 뜻깊은 시간을 가졌다. 동성결혼 및 성소수자 성직 허용에 반대하며 연합감리교회(UMC)를 떠나 새롭게 출범한 GMC 한미연회 목회자들은 이번 모임을 통해 복음과 거룩이라는 교단의 본질을 다시 붙드는 시간을 가졌다.
“서로 사랑하면 이로써…”
이번 모임은 요한복음 13장 35절 “너희가 서로 사랑하면 이로써 모든 사람이 너희가 내 제자인 줄 알리라”를 주제 성구로 삼고, “Remember, Renew, ReVision(기억, 갱신, 재비전)”이라는 주제 아래 진행되었다. 복음 안에서의 정체성을 다시 기억하고, 광야와 같은 시대 속에서 사명을 새롭게 하며, 한미연회의 미래를 향한 비전을 재정립하자는 취지였다.
지난 9일 저녁 라스베가스에 도착한 장로 목사들의 얼굴에는 긴 여정의 피로함보다 서로를 향한 반가움과 기대가 더 크게 묻어났다. 연회와 지방회에서 준비한 15인승 밴을 타고 도착한 라스베가스 글로벌감리교회에는 정성이 담긴 저녁 식사와 따뜻한 환대가 기다리고 있었다. 작은 능력을 가지고도 최선을 다해 섬긴 모습은 요한계시록 3장에 등장하는 빌라델피아 교회를 떠올리게 했다.
예배로 시작된 은혜의 여정
이번 모임의 중심에는 예배가 있었다. 기간 동안 드려진 모든 예배는 뜨거운 찬양과 말씀 선포로 가득했으며, 참석자들은 하나님의 임재 앞에 자신을 다시 세우는 시간을 가졌다. 특히 젊은 목회자들이 전한 말씀을 통해 출애굽의 구원을 넘어 약속의 땅을 향해 우리를 이끄시는 하나님의 마음을 함께 바라보았다.
하나님이 우리 편이 되어 주시기를 구하는 신앙을 넘어, 어떠한 상황 속에서도 우리가 하나님 편에 서겠다는 결단이 이어졌다. 변화하는 시대 속에서도 예수 그리스도의 복음과 성서적인 거룩을 끝까지 붙들고 전하는 참된 종이 되겠다는 다짐이 예배 가운데 선포되었다. 또한 개척 현장에서 역사하시는 하나님의 은혜가 간증으로 나눠질 때마다 참석자들은 감사와 찬양을 하나님께 올려드렸고, 복음 안에서 한 몸 된 공동체임을 깊이 확인했다.
“우리는 누구인가?” 정체성을 묻다
예배를 통해 마음을 모은 목회자들은 “우리는 누구인가?”라는 질문 앞에 함께 섰다. GMC 한미연회는 단순히 어떤 정책적 변화에 대한 반작용으로 존재하는 공동체가 아니라, 성경적 진리와 복음적 정체성을 붙들고 다음 세대를 향해 나아가는 교단임을 다시 한 번 분명히 했다.
강의와 워크샵, 소그룹 나눔을 통해 교단의 정체성과 사명을 재확인했으며, 목회 현장에서 겪는 실제적인 고민과 도전도 진솔하게 나누었다. 류계환 총감리사와의 대화 시간에는 연회 리더십과 현장 목회자들 간의 허심탄회한 소통이 이루어졌고, 연회의 발전을 위한 건설적인 의견들이 오갔다. 참석자들은 각자의 사역지를 넘어 한미연회의 미래를 함께 고민하며 하나님께서 주신 방향을 재정립했다.
교제와 연합 속에 깊어진 동역자 의식
일정 중 진행된 지방별 볼링대회는 유쾌한 화합의 장이 되었다. 사역의 무게를 잠시 내려놓고 함께 웃고 응원하며 교제하는 가운데, 목회자들 사이의 벽은 자연스럽게 허물어졌다. 서로를 격려하고 축복하는 시간을 통해 동역자 의식은 더욱 깊어졌다.
이번 모임은 여러 교회의 헌신적인 후원으로 더욱 풍성하게 치러졌다. 라스베가스 글로벌감리교회를 비롯해 뉴저지 더바인교회, 뉴저지 베다니교회, 디트로이트 한인감리교회, 로뎀교회, 샌안토니오 한인감리교회, 소망한인교회, 찰스톤 한인교회, 탬파한인감리교회 등이 식사와 장학금 등을 후원하며 연합의 의미를 더했다. 작은 능력으로도 최선을 다해 섬긴 라스베가스 글로벌감리교회의 헌신은 참석자들에게 깊은 감동을 주었다. 현재 GMC 장로 목사회는 회장 이성현 목사를 중심으로 부회장 김영훈 목사, 총무 배혁 목사, 서기 김신한 목사가 임원으로 섬기고 있다.
폐회예배와 성찬식으로 2박 3일의 일정을 마친 목회자들은 각자의 사역지로 돌아가며, 이번 모임에서 얻은 ReVision이 목회의 현장 속에서 실제 열매로 나타나기를 기도했다. 참석자들은 어떠한 시대적 도전 앞에서도 하나님 편에 서서 복음을 전하는 교단으로 서겠다는 결단을 다시 한번 마음에 새기며 일정을 마무리했다.

Korean American Annual Conference of Global Methodist Church Holds Clergy Retreat, Reaffirming Denominational Identity and Mission
The Korean American Annual Conference Clergy Fellowship of the Global Methodist Church (GMC) held its regular gathering from February 9 (Mon) through 11 (Wed) at Las Vegas Global Methodist Church, Nevada, for a meaningful time of reaffirming the denomination's identity and renewing their commitment to its mission. Pastors of the GMC Korean American Annual Conference, who departed from the United Methodist Church (UMC) in opposition to same-sex marriage and the ordination of LGBTQ clergy, used this gathering to reclaim the essential foundations of the gospel and holiness.
"By This All Will Know..."
The retreat was held under the theme scripture of John 13:35, "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another," with the theme "Remember, Renew, ReVision." The purpose was to remember our identity in the gospel, renew our calling in this wilderness-like era, and reestablish a vision for the future of the Korean American Annual Conference.
On the evening of February 9, as clergy arrived in Las Vegas, their faces showed more anticipation and joy at seeing one another than fatigue from the long journey. At Las Vegas Global Methodist Church, where they arrived in 15-passenger vans prepared by the conference and districts, a thoughtfully prepared dinner and warm hospitality awaited them. Their devoted service, despite limited resources, brought to mind the church of Philadelphia mentioned in Revelation 3.
A Journey of Grace Beginning with Worship
At the heart of this gathering was worship. Every service held during the retreat overflowed with fervent praise and proclamation of the Word, and participants had time to present themselves anew before God's presence. Through messages delivered by younger pastors in particular, attendees together beheld God's heart to lead us beyond the salvation of the Exodus toward the promised land.
Moving beyond a faith that asks God to be on our side, participants made a decision to stand on God's side regardless of circumstances. A commitment was declared in worship to be faithful servants who hold fast to and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ and biblical holiness to the end, even in changing times. As testimonies of God's grace at work in church planting were shared, participants offered thanksgiving and praise to God, deeply confirming their identity as one body in the gospel.
"Who Are We?" Examining Identity
Having united their hearts through worship, pastors stood together before the question, "Who are we?" The GMC Korean American Annual Conference made clear once again that it exists not simply as a reaction to policy changes, but as a denomination that holds to biblical truth and gospel identity while moving forward for the next generation.
Through lectures, workshops, and small group discussions, they reaffirmed the denomination's identity and mission, while also honestly sharing real struggles and challenges from their ministry contexts. During a conversation time with Superintendent Rev. Keihwan Kevin Ryu, open communication took place between conference leadership and field pastors, with constructive ideas exchanged for the conference's development. Participants looked beyond their individual ministry settings to consider together the future of the Korean American Annual Conference and reestablished the direction God has given.
Deepened Partnership Through Fellowship and Unity
A district-by-district bowling tournament held during the schedule became a delightful occasion for unity. As pastors set aside the weight of ministry for a time to laugh, cheer, and fellowship together, walls between them naturally came down. Through times of encouraging and blessing one another, their sense of partnership deepened.
This gathering was made even more abundant through the dedicated support of various churches. Las Vegas Global Methodist Church, along with The Vine Church in New Jersey, Bethany Church of New Jersey, Korean Methodist Church of Detroit, Rodem Church, Korean Global Methodist Church of San Antonio, Hope KGMC, Charleston Korean Church, and Tampa Korean Methodist Church, among others, provided support through meals and scholarships, adding to the meaning of unity. The dedication of Global Methodist Church in Las Vegas, which served with excellence despite limited resources, deeply moved participants. The GMC Clergy Fellowship currently serves under the leadership of President Rev. Sung Hyun Lee, Vice President Rev. Young Hoon Kim, Secretary General Rev. Hyeok Bae, and Recording Secretary Rev. Shin Han Kim.
After concluding the three-day, two-night schedule with a closing worship service and communion, pastors returned to their respective ministry settings, praying that the ReVision gained from this gathering would bear actual fruit in their ministry contexts. Participants concluded the schedule having once again impressed upon their hearts the determination to stand as a denomination that proclaims the gospel while standing on God's side, regardless of the challenges of our times.
