2026 GMC KAAC Western District Clergy Family Winter Retreat

흔히들 두 마리 토끼를 쫓지 말라고 합니다. 한 마리를 집중해서 쫓아야지 두 마리를 쫓다가는 두 마리 모두 놓치기 십상이라는 뜻입니다. 전자는 ‘선택과 집중’이고 후자는 ‘다양성’입니다. 두가지 모두 목회와 신앙에 있어서 반드시 추구해야 할 방향입니다. 그러므로 두 마리 토끼를 쫓지 말라는 말은 우리에게 해당되지 않습니다. 성경말씀을 제외하고 시대와 공간을 초월하여 영원한 진리는 존재하지 않습니다.

이번 동계 가족 수련회를 준비하고 있는 중에 신병옥 감리사님이 “Vision Casting” 이라는 수련회 주제를 던져 주셨습니다. 처음에는 “뭐지?” 의아해했습니다. 사실 목회자 가족 수련회라고 하면 적당히 몇번의 형식적인 예배를 구색으로 갖춘후 열심히 쉬다가 오는 것으로 생각을 했는데, 이번에 “환갑”을 넘기신 우리 감리사님이 갑자기 왜 저러시나, 빨리 은퇴를 시켜 드려야 하는 것인가 하는 의심의 눈초리를 거둘 수 없었습니다. 그러나 그것은 선택과 집중, 그리고 다양성 모두를 취하고자 했던 큰 그림의 구상이었습니다. 교단 탈퇴와 새로운 개척 이후 힘겨운 목회의 현장에서 심신이 지쳐 있는 목회자 가정에게 쉼과 재충전의 시간을 제공함과 동시에 서로를 위로하고 격려하며 목회의 분명한 방향성을 확립하고자 하는 수련회에 대한 의지였습니다.

같은 지방회 소속이지만 멀리 떨어져 있어 교류가 쉽지 않은 라스베가스 글로벌감리교회를 방문하여 그 교회 성도분들에게 소속감과 정체성을 확신시켜 드릴 수 있었고, 서부지방회의 목회 방향성과 앞으로의 계획에 대한 심도 깊은 대화를 나눌 수 있었으며, 목회자의 가족으로서 겪어야 하는 애환에 대한 공감과 위로의 시간에 더하여 라스베가스 교회 최영완 목사님과 최정현 사모님, 그리고 성도분들의 안내로 멋진 관광 일정까지 즐길 수 있었습니다.

살과 피까지도 기꺼이 나누어 줄 것 같았던 라스베가스 교회의 섬김을 통해 예수님의 섬김을 경험할 수 있었고, ‘선택과 집중’, ‘다양성’ 두 마리 토끼를 다 잡을 수 있었던 수련회 시간을 통해 “다 이루었다” 선언하신 예수님의 마음을 느껴볼 수 있었던, 지금까지는 없었지만 앞으로는 계속될 목회자 가족 수련회의 새로운 기원을 열었다는 자부심으로 이번 수련회를 마칠 수 있었습니다.

There's an old saying about not chasing two rabbits at once. If you chase both, you'll likely catch neither. The idea is that you should focus on one target rather than risk losing everything by pursuing multiple goals. One approach represents "focus and concentration," while the other represents "diversity." Yet both are essential directions we must pursue in ministry and faith. So perhaps the warning about chasing two rabbits doesn't really apply to us after all. Apart from Scripture, there are no eternal truths that transcend time and space.

As we were preparing for this winter family retreat, West Presiding Elder Rev. Byung Ok Shin proposed "Vision Casting" as the retreat theme. My first reaction was puzzlement. Honestly, when I think of a clergy family retreat, I imagine a few perfunctory worship services followed by plenty of rest and relaxation. So when our

district presiding elder, who recently passed his sixtieth birthday, suddenly came up with this idea, I couldn't help but wonder, should we be helping him retire soon? But I soon realized this was part of a bigger vision that embraced both focus and diversity. His intention was to provide rest and renewal for pastoral families exhausted from the demanding realities of ministry following our denominational departure and new church plants, while also offering mutual comfort and encouragement, and establishing clear direction for ministry.

Though part of the same district, Las Vegas Global Methodist Church is geographically distant, making regular fellowship difficult. By visiting that church, we were able to affirm the congregation's sense of belonging and identity. We had in-depth conversations about the ministry direction and future plans for the Western District. We shared understanding and comfort regarding the unique challenges of being a pastoral family. And thanks to the gracious guidance of Rev. Young Wan Choi, his wife Mrs. Jung Hyun Choi, and the church members, we even enjoyed wonderful sightseeing.

Through the servant-hearted hospitality of the Las Vegas church—whose members seemed ready to share even flesh and blood if needed—we experienced the very servanthood of Jesus. Through this retreat that successfully captured both "focus and concentration" and "diversity," we could sense something of Jesus' heart when he declared, "It is finished." We concluded this gathering with a sense of pride that we had opened a new chapter for clergy family retreats—something unprecedented until now, but which will continue in the years ahead.
